How to select the right power inductor model?

2026-10-09

Selecting the right power inductor cannot be based solely on the room-temperature nominal values in the datasheet; rigorous verification against actual operating conditions is mandatory.

First, calculate the required inductance based on the switching frequency and target ripple current (typically 20%~40% of the load current). Second, and most critically, both the saturation current (Isat) and temperature rise current (Irms) must be verified simultaneously. Isat determines whether the inductor will fail under transient peaks. It must be evaluated using the derating curve at the maximum operating temperature with sufficient margin. Otherwise, the inductor may saturate and act as a short circuit, causing catastrophic system failure. Irms dictates the thermal lifespan under long-term full load and must exceed the RMS load current. Finally, once parameters meet the criteria, the physical process should be evaluated. We highly recommend prioritizing the "Hot-Pressed Molding + Independent Magnetic Core" structure. This process features low internal stress without damaging the windings, provides smoother soft-saturation characteristics during high-current surges, and offers lower DC resistance (DCR) to effectively reduce copper loss and temperature rise.
